Modern 5-axis CNC machining delivers exceptional precision, making it the preferred process for complex, high-accuracy components in aerospace, medical, automotive, and precision engineering.
In real production environments, high-quality 5-axis machines consistently achieve ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 inch) on critical features when the part is rigid, the material is stable (such as aluminum 6061, stainless 303, or 17-4PH), and the feature is accessible in a single setup. This level of accuracy is routinely held on linear dimensions, bores, and contoured surfaces under controlled temperature conditions.
For positional tolerances and true position across multiple faces, realistic expectations are typically ±0.01 mm to ±0.02 mm. The single-setup advantage of 5-axis machining eliminates the cumulative datum errors that occur with multiple re-clamping operations on 3-axis machines, resulting in superior overall part accuracy.
Several factors influence the final achievable tolerance:
- Machine calibration and thermal stability
- Tool rigidity and length
- Material behavior (thermal expansion and residual stress)
- Part geometry and fixturing proximity to the rotary center
While ultra-tight tolerances below ±0.005 mm are possible under ideal laboratory conditions, they significantly increase cost and cycle time. For most functional parts, specifying ±0.01 mm on non-critical dimensions and reserving tighter tolerances only where functionally required provides the best balance of performance and cost.
At our facility, we combine advanced 5-axis centers with on-machine probing, temperature-controlled environments, and rigorous process control to deliver reliable precision on every project.
